Arlene Carden Igou

Arlene Carden Igou, 91, of Fort Payne, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center. Services will be Monday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Fort Payne with the Revs. Ricky Smith and Jim Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 10 a.m. until the 2 p.m. hour of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First United Methodist Church, 200 Grand Avenue N, Fort Payne, AL 35967. Survivors include her loving husband of 70 years, Dr. R.A. Igou; son, Richard (Deema) Igou, of Fort Payne; daughters, Susan Long, of Fort Payne, and Mary (Ben) Shurett, of Boaz; sister-in-law, Hazel Sauls; grandchildren, Karen Stout and Chris Long, both of Fort Payne, Charlotte (Steve) Harkins, of Oxford, Christy (Matt) Brandon, of Fort Payne, Anna (Scott) Shinabargar, of Atlanta, Ga., Ellen Igou, of Birmingham, Alex Igou, of Huntsville, Brad (Kimberly) Shurett, of Scottsboro, and Will (Katie) Shurett, of Nashville, Tenn.; and great-grandchildren, Emily Stout, Will Stout, Avery Burke, Sadie Long, Patrick Long,Drew Harkins, Margaret-Baily Turner, Lili Brandon, Susanna Brandon, Benjamin Shinabargar and Jay Shurett; and uncle, James Carden, of Rome, Ga. Mrs. Igou was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Payne, where she was devoted to her Driskill-Wear Sunday School Class and her United Methodist Women's Circle. She was a talented cook and enjoyed preparing delicious meals for the family she loved. She was blessed with a green thumb and had an avid love of reading, traveling to the British Isles and the American west and camping across the United States. She loved the University of Alabama and was active for many years in the DeKalb County Medical Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents, L.R. and Estelle Carden; brothers and sisters-in-law, N.T. and Wannie Carden, and Courtis Wayne and Evelyn Carden; sisters and brothers-in-law, Berenice and J.A. Erwin, and Kathryn and J.C. Turner; son-in-law, Kenneth Long; brother-in-law, Rufus Sauls; and grandson-in-law, Richard Stout. Pallbearers will be Chris Long, Alex Igou, Brad Shurett, Will Shurett, Matt Brandon, Steve Harkins, Scott Shinabarger and Randy Sauls. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
