Barbara Isbell

Barbara Ann Hulgan Isbell died peacefully at Huntsville Hospital on Friday, September 28th with her family at her side. She had danced with her husband only the afternoon before at their residence. Barbara was born July 19, 1933 in Tenbroeck, Alabama to Hazel Inez Pertree and Floyd Haskell Hulgan. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Charles Alexander Isbell; children, Karen (David) Ivey, Laura Patterson, and Chuck Isbell; grandchildren, Allison (David) Whitener and great-granddaughter Grace, Richard (Kelsey) Ivey and great-grandson Everett, Stuart (Courtney) Ivey and great-granddaughter Vivian, Trey Patterson, Tripp Isbell, and Annalee Isbell; brother, Charles (Janice) Hulgan; and a host of extended family and friends she loved as her own. Barbara lived most of her life in Fort Payne, Alabama and was a graduate of Dekalb County High School. She earned her B.A. degree in English from Judson College. She was a teacher and homemaker. Her numerous volunteer contributions made her community a better place. She always strived to exemplify a Christ-like manner. An active member of First Baptist Church, Fort Payne, Barbara sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, directed children’s mission studies, and ministered to individuals in many other ways. She was one of the sweetest people one could ever hope to meet. She was a lover of music and theater, funny stories, the beauty of nature, proper grammar, and all of God’s people, especially children. She was a protector of the small and actively cared for and defended the least of those among us. Barbara devoted her life to her family and anyone in need. She was not only Dr. Charles’ loyal companion, but also his able and helpful assistant. As a mom, she modeled unconditional love, faith, hope, and compassion, and taught her children everything they needed to know. Her grandchildren were not just blessed to have her, they hit the jackpot with the ideal grandmother. Visitation will be Monday, October 1st from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Fort Payne.The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to First Baptist Church, Fort Payne or the Alzheimers Association.
