Edith Kathleen Hill

Edith Kathleen (Chisenhall) Hill passed away Friday, December 18th at the Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama after a courageous battle with leukemia. Her spirit is carried on by her sons, David (Gwen) Hill, Wade (Cindy) Hill, Gary (Rita) Hill and daughter, Linda Dianne (J.D.) Smith. She loved her seven grandchildren, William (Jamie) Lyons, Valarie (Kelly) Moses, Kay (Thomas) Carpenter, Fay (Marc) McDaniel, Jon (Millicent) Hill, Russell (Katie) Hill, and Amy Jo (Mark) Gerjets, and her 19 great-grandchildren. She made each of them feel that they were the most special and favorite. Kat also leaves behind her special friend of many years, Marvice Smith. Kat was born to Leon and Ida Chisenhall on July 3rd, 1925. Kat’s early years were spent with her brother John and two sisters Mary and Lera, helping on the family farm—she was no stranger to hard work. She attended school in Valley Head. During her senior year of high school, she moved to Huntsville to work in a cotton mill and complete her high school education. She returned to Fort Payne and met Robert Lewis Hill. They married in Rising Fawn, Georgia in November of 1945. During their early married years, Kat worked in the sock mills and later at the Van Heusen and Garan factory, where she was a supervisor. After she retired, she worked at the Fountains, taking care of the “old people” as she jokingly said. Her hard working and entrepreneurial spirit continued in her eighties as she provided an ironing service to many families in Fort Payne. Kat had an unwavering faith in God and was a faithful member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. She was a wonderful wife and mother and instilled the love for God and others in her children over the years. Kat was also a member of the local Order of Eastern Star. One of Kat’s passions was flowers--she loved having flowers all around her house. Kat also loved to cook and always had cookies and candy on hand for treats. She was adored by the fire-fighters for her generous supply of delicious cookies and candy. She also loved canning vegetables and fruits during the summer--her pear preserves and corn relish are the best in the world. Kat also enjoyed bird watching and taking care of God’s little creatures. Her yard was a popular place with the local birds—they could always count on a feast of bird seed from her always-filled bird feeders. Kat also had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She and best friend, Marvice, went on many trips all over the United States. One of her favorite trips was to Holland, Michigan to see the acres of tulips in full bloom. Besides travelling, she also enjoyed a good book and read every night. Kat was an avid football fan and enjoyed watching collegiate and pro football games every weekend. She especially enjoyed watching Alabama football with her grandchildren when they visited. Her favorite pro football players were Brett Farve and Tom Brady. Kat’s feisty spirit will certainly be missed. She was loved by all and made a difference in the lives of many. Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 21st at 2:00 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Fort Payne, Alabama with burial immediately following in Glenwood Cemetery.
